Yeah, the Pi is slow, getting 3-10MB/s (2-6mins/GB) between these external drives (100Mbit Ethernet), but it's no skin off your back as you don't have to deal with it.

Reliability went way up by having a different piece of hardware manage the drive(s) - in my case, my temporary torrent download target is a 1TB SSD plugged into a USB port on the NAS, and finished torrents are moved to the NAS volume where Sonarr/Radarr/CP/etc deals with them.

I found that even with an external power supply, plugging USB SSDs into the Pi gave inconsistent results. This means a rock solid usb power supply, a good microSD card, a good USB stick (for '/'), and whatever you're using for external storage. As it is, it's good enough to leave as-is for at least another few months.

I'll say right away that although I now this working well, I really like the idea of using Docker instead of direct installs as it would allow me to move the containers to new hardware, should the system need it (note: it needs it), without going through the process again.
